Morrissey has cancelled a show he was meant to play in Stockholm, Sweden, as he said he and his band are “travel weary beyond belief” and receiving “zero music industry support”.
The cancellation of the show at the city’s Hovet Arena, which was originally scheduled for June 23rd, comes as the latest in a string of shows the former Smiths frontman has been forced to pull out of during his current world tour, which continues until the end of the year.
Morrissey announced the news via his Morrissey Central website the night before the show was due to take place, saying: “The pain at not reaching Stockholm this week is horrific for the band and crew.”
He continued: “I know it’s impossible for people to understand, but we dream of Stockholm, Reykjavik, Trondheim, Helsinki, Aarhus … but there is no financial support from imaginary record labels to get us to such places.”
Noting that he and his band are “travel weary beyond belief” and “can barely see” from travelling to six countries within the space of a week, Morrissey claimed: “We have thousands upon thousands of friends, yet absolutely zero music industry support.”
The former Smiths frontman explained that refunds would be available at the point of purchase, before adding that he hopes to continue the tour from its next date in Berlin on June 27th.
This is the latest cancellation on Morrissey’s tour. He was forced to pull out of two shows in California due to a sinusitis attack and also called off a show in Madrid earlier this month for the same reason.
Morrissey is set to continue his world tour beyond the European dates, heading to Mexico and other parts of Latin America later this year.
Meanwhile, last week, Johnny Marr reflected on The Smiths’ split and revealed why he rejected an opportunity to reunite with Morrissey last year. He said on Stick to Football: “I looked at it for quite a long time and I was really about it, really. It certainly wasn’t a career decision because I had to really look at what’s next.”
The guitarist also opened up about the reunion offer they received in 2024. Marr told host Gary Neville: “We got made an offer really recently, in fact, but yeah, I said no.” He added: “I’m not an idiot, the vibe’s not right. Bad vibe.”
