A Black Lives Matter mural in Washington, DC, began being removed earlier this week following orders from.

The 50-foot-long street mural, which spells out “Black Lives Matter” in yellow, spans two blocks of a pedestrian-only area. It was one of many murals made across the United States following nationwide protests over the murder of George Floyd.

The plan was announced by the city mayor, Muriel Bowser, who was threatened by Republican representative Andrew Clyde of Georgia with cuts of millions of dollars for funding city transportation. He said the mural had to be repainted and renamed Liberty Plaza.

Bowser wrote on X: “The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference. The devastating impacts of the federal job cuts must be our number one concern.”

Protestors gathered when the drilling began and some even picked up parts of the broken concrete to keep as a memory.

The mural is located a quarter mile away from the White House; however, it is not clear whether the decision was based on additional threats by the US government although this was hinted at by Bowser.

It is expected to take six weeks to remove the mural entirely, at which point, works to replace it with a new project dedicated to the anniversary of the country’s 250th founding next year.
