The Black Keys have returned in fine form on their new single, ‘The Night Before’, the first taste from their upcoming album, No Rain, No Flowers.

At this stage, No Rain, No Flowers remains in its final stages, with The Black Keys putting their finishing touches on the pending release, which they expect to arrive later this year. ‘The Night Before’ marks the start of a new chapter for the group, who want to leave their tumultuous 2024 in the past, and move forward.

Their 12th album, Ohio Players, only arrived last April, but The Black Keys unexpectedly found themselves with time on their hands when their extensive North American arena tour was cancelled which led to them parting ways with their management.

Rather than wallow in their misery, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney got stuck into making a new album at the studio, working with a variety of collaborators, including Daniel Tashian who co-wrote ‘The Night Before’.

Auerbach said of the new track: “It’s so groove-based. ‘The Night Before’ started with a chord progression that Daniel and I came up with and the rest just fell out. It was really collaborative and all came together in about 30 minutes.”

Meanwhile, Carney added: “We’ve never really worked with songwriters like that in Nashville. It’s crazy because Daniel was one of the first people I met when I moved to town over a decade ago.  But we pushed ourselves to bring in some new co-writers, and we really tapped into something cool with Daniel.  We’re finishing up the album now and plan to release more tracks leading into the tour.”

The Black Keys will return to the United Kingdom for a series of outdoor shows in July. They will play at Millenium Square in Leeds, Castlefield Bowl in Manchester and Alexandra Palace Park in London with Miles Kane supporting the duo.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Carney addressed their highly-publicised split from their management as well as their tour cancellation, stating, “Our tour, we had about 10 [arena] shows that were not doing great. They were just in rooms that they shouldn’t have been in. So, in any situation like this tour, we might’ve had to take one on the chin and find new venues to play in certain cities, but instead, we were advised to cancel the whole tour.”

The drummer added: “We were told … there were other venues being booked, and it was all going to get into more intimate rooms, and it would be great. But that wasn’t accurate. That didn’t exist.”

Furthermore, Carney also responded to the backlash they faced for playing an intimate show as part of the ‘America Loves Crypto’ series in their hometown, Akron, last year. He confirmed it was a financial decision rather than in support of the Stand With Crypto Alliance, who hosted the event, admitting, “It was very simple: we had lost all of our income for the year. We had retainers for people that we were working with.”
