Spanish actor Verónica Echegui has died aged 42 following a battle with cancer.
Echegui died at a hospital in Madrid on August 24th, 2025, and following her death, Spanish cinema is in a collective state of mourning.
According to the Spanish publication El País, Echegui kept her battle with cancer secret, and only a handful of people in the industry were aware of her health struggles.
During an interview with The Standard in 2015, Echegui explained how acting had been her ambition since she was a young child, stating, “I wanted to be an actress since I was eight but my parents wanted me to study a career. My great-auntie was dying and told me I had to do what I wanted, although I must not tell my mother.”
While Echegui predominantly worked in Spanish-language cinema, she also starred alongside Stanley Tucci and Christopher Eccleston in the hit series, Fortitude. Her other notable work included the Netflix series, Intimacy, and Love You To Death, which streamed on Apple TV+ earlier this year.
In 2007, she won ‘Best Spanish Actress’ at the Saint Jordi Awards for her performance in My Name is Juani and also took home ‘Best Supporting Actress’ at the Gaudí Awards in 2021 due to her role in The Offering.
Tributes have been led by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who wrote on X: “I am shocked to hear the news of the death of Verónica Echegui, an actress with enormous talent and humility who is leaving us far too young. My sincere condolences to all the family and friends in these difficult times.”
Additionally, Antonio Banderas wrote on X: “Today, Spanish cinema is in mourning due to the passing of Verónica Echegui. My condolences to her family and friends.”
