Upon the release of her seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend, Sabrina Carpenter has opened up about the topics on the new project that she found “really urgent to write about.”
Carpenter spoke at a Spotify event in Los Angeles to celebrate her latest record. The ‘Please Please Please’ singer revealed that she learnt to trust herself during the creation of the project: “This creative process was all about sort of embracing spontaneity, all about embracing impulses that I was having and experiences that I was having that were really urgent to write about.”
There was almost exactly one year between this release and her 2024 album Short n’ Sweet; some critics have commented that the album seems somewhat rushed, but Carpenter hit back to say the brevity was part of the creative intention. She said, “Knowing that if I didn’t make this album, and have it represent the chapter of my life that it represents, that it would have turned into something else… and I think that would have done it disservice to this album.”
She continued, “So, I’m really grateful that I just get to write music I love and put it out, and I’m more grateful to you guys for listening to it and letting me.”
Upon the initial announcement, the project faced much backlash due to the provocative album cover, which saw the star on her knees being yanked by the hair by a faceless man. In response, she released an alternative cover, “approved by God.”
With this in mind, a fan asked how she overcomes fears and doubts when releasing a new project. She replied, “I get so excited to put things out. But as any artist does… it’s also very scary and vulnerable. And so I think, I think when I want to get myself out of the rut, I sort am just like… ‘So many bitches wish they were you!”
The singer also recently released a new music video for the second track, ‘Tears’, alongside the new album. The video sees actor Colman Domingo in drag. Watch the full video below.
