Following the success of Nosferatu, Robert Eggers is already planning new projects, including a sequel to the David Bowie fantasy classic Labyrinth.
Eggers is set to co-write the film with Sjón, whom he previously collaborated with on The Northman. Sjón has also co-written the folk horror film Lamb, as well as writing many novels, poems, and plays, and even collaborated with Björk on various songs.
Brian Henson, the son of Labyrinth director Jim Henson, will be executive-producing the upcoming film, while Lisa Henson will be producing alongside Home Alone director Chris Columbus and his daughter, Eleanor Columbus.
There is limited information about the project at the moment, so it remains uncertain how Bowie’s character, Jareth, will be brought back – and who will play him. It is also unknown whether Jennifer Connelly, who portrayed the 16-year-old Sarah, will return for the movie.
The original movie is a cult classic, becoming popular with both Bowie lovers and fantasy fans alike. Helmed by Henson, the creator of The Muppets, the film also charmed viewers with its cast of puppets. While it failed at the box-office, the years that followed saw Labyrinth become much more popular.
A sequel has been in the works for some time, but the director who was initially hired, Scott Derrickson, stepped down from the project after reportedly finding it too challenging.
While the news of an Eggers-directed Labyrinth sequel is exciting, fans of The Lighthouse filmmaker also have another project of his to look forward to in the meantime. He is currently working on Werwulf, a period piece set in the 13th century.
The movie is set for release on Christmas Day 2026, similar to how Nosferatu hit cinemas on December 25th, 2024. Like Nosferatu, it seems as though Werewulf will harness a gothic horror style.
