Aerosmith will reunite for a one-off charity event in February as part of Steven Tyler’s Jam For Janie after previously announcing their official retirement.
Last August, the band announced their retirement from the road following damage sustained to Tyler’s vocal cords. At the time, their message said that a full recovery wasn’t possible and that the decision to step back was “heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary.”
“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing,” they wrote on social media. “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side.”
“Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the band continued. “We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”
The retirement surprised the band and fans after Tyler initially sustained his injury during a performance in 2023 as part of their aptly titled Peace Out… Farewell Tour. It marked their final performance as a band, which was their show in New York in September of the same year.
However, while fans expected their retirement to be permanent, the band are scheduled to reunite on February 2nd for Tyler’s charity Jam For Janie event held at the Hollywood Palladium. Although details surrounding their performance have yet to be revealed, they will share the stage with other big names, including Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Linda Perry, and others.
Tyler owns the event in support of Janie’s Fund, a charity which provides support to American women who have experienced abuse and neglect. This year, the event will also raise funds to support the Los Angeles wildfires, with over 100 firefighters in attendance. It will also double up as a Grammy viewing party.
While fans are undoubtedly excited about their temporary return, this isn’t the first time a reunion has been teased or suggested as possible. Bassist Tom Hamilton also recently addressed the band’s future, admitting they “could do something” one day if Tyler was willing and able.
Continuing, he said Tyler’s healing was going “really, really well” but that it was also going “at its own pace.” He added: “Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big ‘if’, and the last thing I want to be doing is to try and push Steven in that direction. If we do anything in the future, it would come from him.”
