Comedian John Mulaney was the mastermind behind a one-off performance by punk band Metz on the talk show Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney. Metz performed their 2020 track ‘A Boat to Drown In’.
Mulaney jokingly presented the episode as his Christmas special despite the programme airing in late April. He called the reunion a “Christmas miracle”, adding, “They’ve reunited for one night only just to play for you. One of my favourite bands ever, ladies and gentlemen, Metz!”
Metz launched into ‘A Boat to Drown In’, the final track on the 2020 album Atlas Vending. In 2024, Metz released their most recent album, Up on Gravity Hill, after which they announced an indefinite hiatus in October 2024. This hiatus was to focus on other projects and spend more time with family.
Thanks to Mulaney’s magic, the band were back together on stage for the extraordinary performance. In keeping with the Christmas joke, fake snow fell around them.
Speaking to Far Out in 2024, the band noted how their approach to their craft had recently shifted. “All three of us were in that mindset where, after the pandemic and after the break, a lot of things had changed. I think we had changed, and we wanted to make a record based on where we were at that moment.”
With a thick back catalogue and a long history, moving on from the past seemed to “make sense” for the band. In light of these remarks, their hiatus wasn’t all too surprising.
Though Metz won’t be performing live anywhere else, Mulaney is soon hitting the road. His recently announced stand-up tour will kick off on June 27th and run all the way to December 19th when it concludes in Washington DC.
