Iconic actor Helen Mirren has issued a stern warning to wealthy “tech bros” in a new interview following her appearance in the whodunit The Thursday Murder Club.
Speaking with The Times, the 80-year-old actor ruminated on her experience of ageing. In doing so, she imparted a particular piece of wisdom passed down from her mother.
Mirren recalled, “She said: ‘Never be afraid of getting older. An amazing thing happens. When you’re 18 the thought of being 35 is horrific. And you get to 35 and it’s actually a lot better than being 18.”
The cycle continues: “And when you’re 35 the thought of being 55 … Then you hit 55 and you realise there are great things about being 55. Your life has moved on, you lose certain stuff but you gain other stuff.’ That’s certainly the case for me.”
Mirren recalled how she lost her father when he was 67, and her mother when she was 87. Other losses in her life have led to her acceptance of grief as a normal part of our existence. “As you travel through life you realise death is absolutely part of life. And it’s always tragic and it can happen when you’re young,” she commented.
The Queen actor turned her gaze upon a different group of people who, she believes, are using all of their means of fighting the inevitable. She said, “The tech bros think their billions are somehow going to hold back time. They haven’t learnt my mum’s lesson. It’s a natural wave of life that has been going on for billions of years and it’s beautiful to be part of that wave.”
For Mirren, this is what humanity is “all about in the end.” She added, finally, “It’s important not to wimp out. You’re not going to be 30 when you’re 50. You’re just not.”
Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees: Elizabeth (Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie). Mirren’s character is an ex-spy.
The Thursday Murder Club is currently cinemas, and will arrive on Netflix on August 28th.
