Cameron Winter says making the new Geese album was a “waking nightmare”

Geese frontman Cameron Winter has opened up about the challenge of making their third studio album, Getting Killed, set for release on September 26th.

Genre-defying alt-rock New York four-piece Geese are heading for new heights on their upcoming album, Getting Killed, which follows on from their 2023 album 3D Country and their 2021 debut Projector.

In a new interview, Winter admitted to Rolling Stone that the experience of making their third studio album wasn’t exactly enjoyable. He shared, “I was unhappy until the last possible moment.”

He continued, “Maybe even still. The whole process — maybe this is just how we make albums — but it’s all kind of a waking nightmare until it’s mastered.”

At one point in the interview, the band discussed 16-hour working days, and an entire day lost to choosing a handclap sound amid 7,000 samples.

Their producer, Kenny Blume, added in on the discussion, recalling a time when he had called to check in on Winter, who had just left the hospital after a particularly bad panic attack. He commented, “I was like, ‘Brother, you gotta get a break’. But that man did not take one break until it was mastered. And then he was sending master notes for four days.”

Winter is no stranger to hard work, as he made his first solo project, Heavy Metal, in the summer of 2023, following on from the band’s second album. Though the immediate critical reception was lacklustre, glowing reviews soon flooded in for the star, subsequently elevating the interest in Geese.

In a four-star review of his solo album, Far Out wrote, “Whatever project he is working on, Winter is seemingly always out to surprise, and while the album title might suggest that there’s going to be a lot of crunching riffs and Satanic worship, the madness is presented in a far more raw and emotionally arresting fashion, with deft arrangements shining underneath his captivating and often histrionic performance.”

Following on from their new album release, Geese have also announced their 2025 North American ‘Getting Killed’ tour, which will begin on October 10th and end in New York on November 21st.
