The 2026 television landscape has proven to be a period of significant transition for major networks, and CBS is no exception. Following a series of strategic renewals earlier in the year, the network has moved to streamline its programming slate, resulting in the cancellation of several notable series. These decisions, often driven by a combination of shifting viewership metrics and rising production costs, have sparked considerable conversation among dedicated fan bases.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Perhaps the most high-profile departure from the CBS lineup is The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The network confirmed that the long-running late-night staple will air its final episode on May 21, 2026. In an official statement, CBS executives characterized the move as a strictly financial decision necessitated by the challenging economic climate currently facing the late-night television genre.

“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise in May of 2026,” the network stated. “We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late-night television.”

The Neighborhood

After a successful run, the sitcom The Neighborhood is set to conclude with its upcoming eighth season. Despite the disappointment for loyal viewers, the cast has expressed a sense of gratitude for the show’s longevity. Actor Max Greenfield recently shared his perspective with Us Weekly, noting the rarity of a series reaching an eight-season milestone in the current media environment. “We might be the last one,” Greenfield remarked. “So, I’m genuinely not sad at all that this is ending and feel so grateful for the eight seasons that we were given.”

Watson and DMV

The network also confirmed the conclusion of two other projects. Watson, the medical drama, will not return for a third season following mixed critical reception. Additionally, the comedy series DMV has been canceled after its inaugural season, with the series finale scheduled to air this May. These cancellations reflect the network’s ongoing efforts to balance its portfolio and pivot toward new content strategies for the remainder of the year.
