Indie-rockers Wet Leg played a stellar headline set at Wales’ biggest festival, Green Man, and delivered an emotionally-charged powerhouse performance of new track ‘Davina McCall’.
Though the ‘Chaise Longue’ performers were only scheduled for a single set to round off the night on the Mountain Stage, they appeared mysteriously earlier in the day to perform a packed-out show at Round The Twist.
Opening strong with ‘Catch These Fists’, the Isle of Wight musicians later revealed that, at least in frontwoman Rhian Teasedale’s case, Green Man was the very first festival they ever attended off the island. Their Green Man performance debut was in 2021 on the Far Out stage.
Several tracks in, the band played Davina McCall, Teasedale taking the opportunity to let her silky vocals speak for themselves. “I’ll be your Davina, I’m coming to get you / Fetch you from the station, never gonna let you go,” She sang. The audience finished the refrain, “It’s that kinda love.”
In July, their latest album Moisturizer officially beat the resurgence of Oasis to top the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and the Official Record Store Chart, which named it the biggest seller of the previous seven days in UK independent record shops.
Racing through hits from the latest record, as well as 2022’s eponymous project Wet Leg, the band quickly came to the end of the 85-minute set. “We don’t do encores, so you’ve got two songs left!” They yelled, rounding out the set with two new tracks, ‘Mangetout’ and ‘CPR’. The latter includes the familiar conceit which sees Teasedale pick up a telephone, answering a “Hello, 999, What’s your emergency?” with a giggly, “The thing is… I’m in love!”
Wet Leg performed in the wake of an eclectic array of acts like Pissed Jeans and Panda Bear, Sex Week and Silver Gore. Wunderhorse supported on the Mountain Stage, warming the large crowd up for a brighter, punchier dose of indie-rock.
Throughout the rest of the weekend, the Brecon Beacons will welcome MJ Lenderman, CMAT, English Teacher, and Underworld on Saturday. On Sunday, TV on the Radio will headline the Mountain Stage, supported throughout the day by Beth Gibbons and Yard Act.
