Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain are publicly feuding on social media after Del Rey posted a video clip of a new song, ‘All About Ethel’, before expressing that Cain’s behaviour “deeply disturbed” her.

In the new post, the ‘Video Games’ singer can be seen posing in her car while the speaker plays the track. The first lyrics that can be heard in the track are, “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose.”

Following the emergence of the clip, images of Del Rey and Cain standing next to Jack Donoghue, a member of the underground duo Salem, in similar poses have since circulated on social media. Donoghue, who used to date Del Rey, was seen standing before the Cook County Jail in Chicago in July 2022. Meanwhile, the photo showing Cain and Donoghue in a similar embrace hails from 2021.

Later in the song, she sang the lyrics, “The most famous girl at the Waffle House / I don’t regret it / The most famous girl at the Waffle House.” On May 11th, 2022, The New York Times posted an article about Ethel Cain titled, “The Most Famous Girl at the Waffle House.” Del Rey was also seen working in a Waffle House in Alabama in 2023 in a publicity stunt.

After the song was posted as a reel on Instagram, Cain took to her story to announce simply, “Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram.”

After the account Popbase picked up the news and posted it to their social media feeds, Del Rey elaborated on her position in a comment on one of their posts. She wrote on Instagram, “I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at.”

The ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer added, “Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.” Cain has yet to comment on these allegations.

Cain’s new album, Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, received a glowing five-star review from Far Out: “The world of Ethel Cain only expands alongside the visionary power and ever-growing potential of Hayden Silas Anhedönia as her creator. Poignant and powerful from start to finish, it can be no less than full marks for a work this thorough and this impactful.”

On Del Rey’s end, the star teased a new album on Instagram in November 2024, set for a May 2025 release. At that time, she revealed that it would feature 13 tracks and collaborations with Luke Laird, Jack Antonoff, Zach Dawes, and Drew Erickson.

In April, Del Rey announced the project would have a different name and “will not come on time”. However, she did release two tracks from the album and teased another at her Stagecoach performance.
