American singer Samia has rushed to release a new version of one of her songs, after it has unexpectedly gone viral on TikTok.
‘Pool’ has garnered social media acclaim after a video of the musician performing an acoustic version of it at her NPR Tiny Desk Concert two years ago resurfaced online, prompting a campaign from fans for her to rerelease the popular cut.
The new single, titled ‘Pool – Stripped’, comes five years after the original song was released as the opening track to Samia’s debut studio album, The Baby, back in 2020.
Samia is just the latest in a line of artists who are rushing to release or perform older deep cuts from their back catalogues after finding recent viral fame, following on from Chappell Roan putting out a full version of ‘The Subway’ after it had become a fan favourite due to its inclusion in her live sets.
However, despite indulging in this trend, Roan caveated her stance on hastily-produced music by stating that her second album could potentially take another five years to make, telling Vogue in a recent interview: “I’m not the type of writer that can pump it out.”
She added: “I see some comments sometimes, like, ‘She’s everywhere except that damn studio’. Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.”
It is not just current pop artists who have been forced to return to their old music in light of newfound virality. Veteran rocker Iggy Pop recently performed his 2006 song ‘Punkrocker’ live for the very first time at a festival in Portland, Oregon, on account of its resurgence from being used in the latest Superman movie.
