Humans most frequently contract the disease after being bitten by a tick carrying certain bacteria.

Just after he wrapped his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, Justin Timberlake shocked his fanbase by revealing that he’d pulled the trek off while simultaneously dealing with a sometimes debilitating illness: Lyme disease.
As revealed in a vulnerable Instagram post just one day after his final show, the pop superstar had long been suffering from nerve pain and severe fatigue caused by Lyme that made him question whether he should stop touring. “When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure,” he wrote. “Living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.”
He was ultimately able to overcome his symptoms and forge ahead with the tour, but Timberlake is just one of the 476,000 people the CDC estimates will receive a Lyme diagnosis each year. He’s also not the only musician who’s been open about struggling with the illness, which is usually contracted after being bitten by a tick carrying borrelia bacteria. Some of the biggest names in pop, country and rock have all battled symptoms from the disease — which is known for causing body aches, muscle weakness and immune-system problems, according to the Mayo Clinic — and those are only the celebrities who have publicly shared their diagnoses. Like countless other people, there are more than likely a few stars who struggle with the disease in private.

Avril Lavigne
Lavigne first started seeking answers to health issues she was having during her 2014 tour. “I’m achy, I’m fatigued, I cannot get the f–k out of bed — what the f–k is wrong with me?” she recalled asking doctors in a 2018 Billboard interview.
In that same interview — which was published three years after the Princess of Punk revealed her diagnosis to the public — Lavigne opened up about her course of antibiotic treatments and worrying that Lyme disease would become part of her “identity.” But, deciding that she ultimately wanted to raise awareness for the condition, she said: “I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to relive it. But it’s my responsibility.”

Daryl Hall
Daryl Hall was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2005. His condition came to light as his illness had forced him to postpone 16 Hall & Oates tour dates that year.

Debbie Gibson
Gibson has been very open about struggling with Lyme disease, keeping fans updated through the years on how it’s affected her. In a 2015 interview with Billboard, she explained, “The weird thing with Lyme disease is, one day you wake up and you’re like, ‘It’s gone!’ And that’s the day that gets me in trouble, dietary-wise or by over-exerting.”
“Not only am I back to square one, but it takes me a month to get back to where I was that day,” she continued at the time. “So, I’ve been finding my way. I think the biggest key for me is I want to feel good. I don’t want this to be some black hole I fall into.”

Fletcher
After revealing her diagnosis in September 2023, Fletcher — the pop singer born Cari Fletcher — spoke about her experiences with Lyme disease at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards. “Being able to be open about that and share that part of my journey felt like an honoring of Cari, the human, and not just Fletcher, the artist, and weaving those worlds together,” she told People at the event of going public with her diagnosis.
When she first told fans about her health struggles, she wrote, “Lyme has affected me in a variety of ways and while it has not only taken a tremendous toll on my physical body, it has also caused concern for my voice as well. This has worn on my soul in a way that’s hard to even put words to as singing is the thing I love most in this world and my voice is my vessel for expression.”

Justin Bieber
After receiving concerned comments on his appearance, Bieber confirmed that the reason he looked ill was because had contracted Lyme disease. At the time, he noted that the illness was affecting his “skin, brain function, engery and overall health.”
Shortly afterward, the pop star’s wife, mogul Hailey Bieber, urged trolls to take her husband’s condition seriously. “For those who are trying to downplay the severity of Lyme disease,” she wrote on X at the time. “Please do your research and listen to the stories of people who have suffered with it for years. Making fun of and belittling a disease you don’t understand is never the way, all it takes is educating yourself.”

Justin Timberlake
Timberlake’s announcement in July 2025 that he had Lyme disease came as a surprise, as he’d just finished an exhaustive world tour just one day prior. But, as he noted in his post, his time on the road was a test in balancing the “fun, emotional, gratifying” parts of touring with the “physically demanding and, at times, grueling” strain on his body.
“Not only did I prove my mental tenacity to myself but, I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget,” he wrote at the time. “I was reluctant to talk about this because I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself. But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted.”

Kelly Osbourne
Kelly Osbourne revealed she had Lyme disease in her 2017 memoir, There Is No F–king Secret: Letters From a Badass Bitch. In the book, she explained that she’d been bitten by a carrier tick in 2004, but her doctors only discovered that she might be suffering from Lyme after she spent years taking multiple medications to ineffectively treat chronic stomachaches, throat pain, insomnia and seizures.

Kris Kristofferson
Kristofferson’s battle with Lyme disease is a reminder of how the illness can fly under the radar for a long time before it’s diagnosed. For years, the singer-songwriter’s doctors believed that his issues with brain fog and memory loss were signs of Alzheimer’s. It wasn’t until 2016 that they finally discovered he had been misdiagnosed, and that Lyme disease was actually to blame.

Shania Twain
Twain’s experience with Lyme disease — which she got after being bitten by a tick in 2004 — has had very serious impacts on her ability to perform. In 2018, she underwent open-throat surgery to treat nerve damage in her vocal cords caused by the illness.
“Lyme disease does affect your life for sure,” she told E! News that year. “It’s such an evil silent thing.”
