Former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has revealed that he is writing a book about his life.
Speaking to Contact Music, the musician mused on ambitions he hopes to fulfil before turning 69. In reply, he revealed, “I am writing a book, of sorts. Of course it’s based on truth, but it’s a juxtaposition of the characters.”
He expanded, “I can’t just sit down and not do nothing, it’s not my way. Yet I’ve created a wonderful impression that I just sit around watching TV all day which I can’t stand doing.”
Writing recently on the rise, fall, and unwanted reprise of the musician, Far Out explained that “John Lydon was responsible for the punk movement. While that foundation may have existed, there was a lot more to it than that. What Lydon brought to the scene with his interrogation of the world was the thesis that followed punk around, one that was also political and societal.” Much of this attitude can be anticipated in his novel.
Lydon suggests that the project may be multi-disciplinary. Speaking of his newfound love of art, Lydon said, “I love painting. There’s an enticement there that I start collecting my paintings and displaying them. I’ve used them in books that I’ve put together in the past. There’s a whole bunch of new stuff that is very relevant to me. If there’s an audience for that then that’s well and fine. If there isn’t then I can wait. Even after death.”
John Lydon recently made headlines when he lashed out at Irish trio Kneecap after member Mo Chara faced a terror charge relatng to two on-stage incidents from shows in London in 2024 and 2023, respectively. The punk singer stated: “You shouldn’t be talking like that, you shouldn’t be making enemies of your fellow human beings. Other than that, maybe they need a bloody good kneecapping!”
Lydon is currently on tour with his band, Public Image Ltd, until August.
