Amanda Seyfried has denied claims that her recent Joni Mitchell cover on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon was an attempt to generate interest in a possible biopic.

Last week, Seyfried impressed viewers of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon when she played the dulcimer to cover the classic Mitchell track, ‘California’. It has since racked up millions of views across social media and gone viral.

As a result of the clip, Seyfried has been the subject of speculation regarding a Mitchell biopic, but according to the actor, there are currently no plans in place for the film to come to fruition.

In a podcast appearance on Just for Variety, Seyfried maintained: “It was not an audition. In fact, I didn’t even consider that, which is funny. What I know about that project is that I’m very, very much aged-out of young Joni.”

However, Seyfried does have a history with Mitchell. The pair previously met “years ago” and she described Mitchell as a “beautiful inspiration”, adding, “She’s wonderful. She’s Joni Mitchell.”

The actor also said of her ‘California‘ cover: “I learned the dulcimer after I had met Joni. Years ago. Way before Cameron Crowe was even born. I learned a lot of the songs on her Blue album after meeting her. How could you not want to.”

Crowe, who Seyfried mentioned, is currently working on a biopic celebrating Mitchell’s life, but it appears unclear who will portray the legendary singer.

The filmmaker first announced that he would be making the movie in 2023, revealing that he had been developing it for the past two years. It has also been speculated that Meryl Streep will play an older version of the musician and another actor will star as a younger Mitchell.

Talking to Ultimate Classic Rock in October, Crowe shared, “I’m super-excited. We’re going to start it by the end of this year and hopefully have it done for Christmas next year.”

He continued, “You know, similarly to Heartbreakers Beach Party, it’s Joni’s life, not through anybody else’s prism. It’s through her prism. It’s the characters who impacted her life that you know and a lot that you don’t know. And the music is so cinematic.”
