For years, the Oscar nominees for ‘Best Original Song’ were invited to perform at the ceremony, but now this will change. The musicians will no longer take to the stage to give a rendition of their nominated song to the audience, with the Academy officials sharing a statement about the new plans for the night.
There have been some memorable musical performances at the Oscars over the decades, from Björk singing ‘I’ve Seen It All’ in her iconic swan dress to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s powerful delivery of ‘Shallow’.
Last year, the standout moment for many was Ryan Gosling’s performance of ‘I’m Just Ken’ alongside various actors who played Ken dolls in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, complete with plenty of dancing.
Yet, there will no longer be musical interludes highlighting the greatest original tracks made for the screen this year, with CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Bill Kramer, and Academy President, Janet Yang, outlining the Academy’s new way of celebrating the musicians and songwriters instead.
“This year the ‘Best Original Song’ category presentation will move away from live performances and will be focused on the songwriters. We will celebrate their artistry through personal reflections from the teams who bring these songs to life,” they shared.
“All of this, and more, will uncover the stories and inspiration behind this year’s nominees,” the duo added.
The nominees for ‘Best Original Score’ are set to be announced on January 23rd. The shortlist was shared in December, however, with tracks like ‘Mi Camino’ by Selena Gomez (Emilia Perez), Elton John and Brandi Carlile’s ‘Never Too Late’ (Elton John: Never Too Late) and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ ‘Compress/Repress’ (Challengers) making the cut.
