Wildfire is rapidly spreading in Los Angeles, with over 30,000 people being forced to evacuate their homes. Subsequently, various Hollywood events, including the SAG Awards nomination announcement ceremony, have been cancelled.
The Pacific Palisades neighbourhood has been significantly affected, with many homes succumbing to the fires. In the interest of safety, the Screen Actors Guild announced the cancellation of their annual ceremony. The fire had spread rapidly over a matter of hours, going from covering 20 acres to over 3,000.
The organisation is instead sharing the nominees in a press release rather than going ahead with the event, which was scheduled to take place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
A statement released by the Screen Actors Guild read: “In an abundance of caution for the safety of our presenters, guests, and staff, the live in-person 31st Annual SAG Awards nominations announcement has been canceled due to the wildfires and adverse wind conditions in Los Angeles.”
They added, “Nominees will be unveiled tomorrow at 7:30 am PT via press release and the SAG Awards website. We look forward to celebrating these incredible actors and their work at the SAG Awards ceremony on February 23. In the meantime, we urge everyone to stay safe, and thank you for your continued support.”
Premieres of The Pitt and Better Man were both scheduled for January 8th, but they have been cancelled due to safety concerns. The latter, a biopic of British musician Robbie Williams, was cancelled by the studio “due to the dangerous conditions affecting Los Angeles.” Meanwhile, last night’s premieres of Unstoppable and Wolf Man didn’t go ahead either.
Not only has the Pacific Palisades area been gravely affected, but there is now another fire in the Altadena-Pasadena area. Strong winds have led to the fires spreading incredibly quickly, with serious threats to life issued by local authorities.
Actor Steve Guttenberg, a local resident in the Pacific Palisades, told CNN that these fires are “the most unbelievable I’ve ever seen.” He noted that there is severe traffic as people are attempting to flee, while observing countless trees and buildings burning down. Palisades High School is one of many buildings that have been destroyed, leaving the neighbourhood in a state of chaos.
