It’s been a bleak week for many across the world. However, as life trudges on and the end of the year draws ever closer, our sights are turning toward Christmas. Although there is more cause for reflection this year than in previous ones, an unlikely duo have just teamed up to release a festive song tapping into this spirit: Jason Kelce and Stevie Nicks.
While the former Philadelphia Eagles legend is a contemporary hero of the NFL, winner of the Super Bowl LII, and is regarded as one of the greatest centers in the history of the sport, he is the older brother of his more famous sibling, Travis, famed for his own NFL heroics and the fact he is Taylor Swift’s current boyfriend. The pair also co-host the New Heights podcast.
Over the past couple of years, Jason Kelce has delved into the music world by releasing Christmas records. The first was 2022’s A Philly Special Christmas by The Philly Specials, a vocal trio comprised of Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen Kelce, Lane Johnson, and Jordan Mailata.
Produced by The War on Drugs drummer Charlie Hall, it featured covers of classic Christmas songs, with all proceeds of the album going to the Children’s Crisis Treatment Centre in Philadelphia. In 2023, they followed it up with A Philly Special Christmas Special.
It has now been announced that later this month, the trio will return with A Philly Special Christmas Party. Last week, Kelce released ‘It’s Christmastime (In Cleveland Heights)’ alongside his brother and R&B legends Boyz II Men, and now he and Fleetwood Mac legend Nicks have teamed up for the heartwarming cover of Ron Sexmith’s ‘Maybe This Christmas’. In a video of the pair in the studio posted to A Philly Special Christmas’s Instagram, Kecle tells Nicks: “This is my dream come true.”
Hall has also shared some thoughts on the track and its reflective spirit. He said: “I love ‘Maybe This Christmas’ for so many reasons — the shape of the melody, the way the chords have their own melodic arc, the feel — but I love it most of all for its message of hope and forgiveness.”
The drummer continued: “While the holidays are about togetherness, it also offers a time for reflection and sometimes that means considering ‘someone we love, someone we’ve lost, for reasons we can’t quite recall…’ And in today’s day and age, it’s nice to think that, indeed, ‘maybe this year love will appear deeper than ever before.’”
“I was really hoping this song would resonate with Jason when we were kicking around ideas for this record, and it’s clear from the way he inhabits that beautiful melody that it did. And to have Stevie Nicks, one of the all-time masters of emotional transference (and an all-time hero of mine) come in and amplify all this is such a dream. I love this duet so much,” Hall concluded.
