Zack Snyder on his director’s cuts being “better” than cinema releases

American director Zack Snyder has just released his newest movie, Rebel Moon, which will make its way onto Netflix on December 21st.
However, the filmmaker is planning on sharing an extended cut of the space opera at the start of 2024. This isn’t the first time Snyder has done something like this. Back in 2021, Snyder released a director’s cut of 2017’s Justice League, adding 122 extra minutes of footage.
He left the production of Justice League after his daughter committed suicide, leaving Joss Whedon to take his place. The filmmaker previously told CinemaBlend that he had “zero energy” left to fight the studio’s demands.
It appears that Snyder has often been working against studios, who often attempt to sway the director’s movies towards a commercially-friendly PG-13 rating.
Rebel Moon has been given a PG-13 rating, yet the extended cut will be Rated R. In a new interview with iNews, he explained, “I guess my kneejerk aesthetic happens to be darker. If I go with my instincts it ends up being R-rated. Director’s cuts I’ve done in the past have always been motivated by a contentious relationship with the studio.”
The director added, “It’s my experience that the director’s cuts of my movies are universally considered better than what I released in the movie theatre under the thumb of people that know better than me. I wasn’t fighting anyone”.
