The one song Florence Pugh would choose to soundtrack her life: “Has been for a really long time”

Of all the young actors that have risen up the ranks over the past decade or so, few have been as deserving as Florence Pugh. The popular Brit has proven in a very short space of time that there is very little she cannot do, from more grounded roles in Little Women and Fighting with My Family to higher stakes positions in Midsommar and the ‘Dune’ franchise. She is a fabulous performer and (at time of writing) hasn’t even hit 30 yet, in case you didn’t feel inferior enough.
Before she made it big in the acting world, Pugh seemingly harboured ambitions to become a singer. Under the name Flossie Rose, she would regularly upload videos to YouTube of her covering songs on the acoustic guitar. Her brother Sebastian is a professional musician who goes by the name Toby Sebastian and, in 2023, his sister followed in his footsteps by releasing two singles from the soundtrack of her movie A Good Person.
Music clearly plays a big part in Pugh’s life, so it should come as no surprise that she’s thought about what song she would want to hear if her story was ever dramatised. In an interview with Elle UK, the Black Widow star was asked what the anthem to her life was. “Not the anthem but definitely a song that welcomes people to my life would be ‘Southern Sun’ by Boy & Bear,” she replied (via Tone Deaf). “It is one of my favourite songs and has been for a really long time.”
Boy & Bear are an Australian indie folk group that have been around since 2009. ‘Southern Sun’ was released as the lead single of the band’s second album, 2013’s Harlequin. It went platinum three times over in their native land and its music video is currently the most-viewed upload on the band’s YouTube channel. It’s unclear whether or not Pugh’s endorsement of the track has helped it reach these numbers, but it certainly can’t have hurt it.
Anyone who follows Pugh on social media will know that she posts about music a lot. In 2021, she posted a video of a playlist of songs she said made her happy. These included tracks from established artists like Robert Palmer (‘Woke Up Laughing’), The Strokes (‘The Adults Are Talking’), and Tame Impala (‘Lost in Yesterday’), as well as lesser-known acts including Free Youth (‘We Can Move’), Elle Músa (‘Mango Pops’), and Hallelujah Chicken Run Band (‘Mudzimu Ndiringe’).
Even as the Queen of the Frown has grown in reputation and stature, she has still kept her musical operations to a limit. She released a duet with her brother in 2023 entitled ‘Midnight’, appearing in its accompanying music video, and she also featured in another video for Rachel Chinouriri’s 2024 song ‘Never Need Me’. She did also briefly sing in the trailer for Don’t Worry Darling, but nobody needs reminding of that nightmare. Especially not Florence Pugh.
From her acting prowess to her deep-seated love of music, it’s clear that Pugh is a creative person in every sense of the word. She’s already dipped her toe into the musical waters, and with a hopefully lengthy career ahead of her, there’s every chance she could delve even further and maybe even collaborate with her Aussie faves one day.
