Michael Fassbender has touted his co-star in his latest movie, Regé-Jean Page, for the role of James Bond as speculation over who will next take over the reins of the 007 franchise continues to intensify.
Fassbender was speaking to Us Weekly ahead of the premiere of his new film Black Bag, where he stars opposite Page, Cate Blanchett, and former Bond girl Naomie Harris in an epic spy thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Although rumoured to have been in contention for the role himself, Fassbender passed over the focus to the Bridgerton actor, saying: “Well, I think Regé-Jean Page could be a frontrunner after this, to be honest. I think he’s fantastic. He’s got all the attributes. So, let’s wait and see.”
The sentiment was echoed by Harris, who some could argue has a better inside scoop than most following her stint as Moneypenny in three of Daniel Craig’s Bond films – Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. She said: “I think Regé would be amazing. I’d love Regé to be the next James Bond. But who knows? I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Speculation has reached fever pitch in recent weeks, not only over which actor will assume the role after Craig called it quits in 2021’s No Time to Die but also over what the future of the franchise will look like as a whole after it was bought over by Amazon MGM Studios on February 20th.
Despite huge changes to the world’s most famous spy possibly in the works, Amazon have confirmed that the character will remain with a trademark British male persona. Elsewhere, previous Bond actors have thrown their weight behind other prominent names in the ring, with Pierce Brosnan claiming Aaron Taylor-Johnson would be the best fit for the role.
Fassbender and Page’s new film Black Bag will be released on March 14th.
