Soundwall Collective with Patti Smith have unveiled details of their new album, Correspondences Vol II, which will be released on March 21st through Bella Union.

The upcoming album marks the second full-length collaboration between the Soundwalk Collective and Smith, who released Correspondences Vol I in May 2024. The first project explored the connections between the Greek mythological figure Medea, the daughter of the sun who murdered her own children, and Italian film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, who directed the 1969 movie Medea starring Maria Callas.

For the second album between Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith, similarly explores the theme of connection but with a unique twist. The press release explains: “Vol. II is similarly conceived, not only as a dialogue between the artists but also between the two sides of the record – ‘Children of Chernobyl’ and ‘The Acolyte, The Artist and Nature’ – a correspondence spanning more than 500 years, from the turbulence of medieval Russia, through the terrible events of 1986, to the ecological crisis of the here and now.”

With her work with the Soundwalk Collective, Smith improvises spoken-word poetry which is delicately placed to music. “It’s a process of discovery through improvisation and channelling,” Smith explains of their creative process.

She added: “We are sort of two halves, and we merge together the mental and physical traveller to get the atmosphere and the visual content – the music, even – and the words that will articulate what we want to do.”

Smith also noted: “It sounds abstract, but it creates an atmosphere and almost an earth that I can walk around in my mind. I can walk to these places or feel the spirits of these places, because at this point in my life I can’t make difficult journeys. I become the mental traveller. I don’t have to buy a ticket, I don’t have to go to the airport; I just listen and let myself be carried away.”

Additionally, Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith are set to play a series of dates in Japan following the release of the album.

Outside of her live dates with the Soundwalk Collective, Smith will spend time on the road celebrating the 50th anniversary of her seminal debut album, Horses.

Smith will perform two shows at the London Palladium on October 12th and 13th, with shows in Dublin, Madrid, Bergamo, Brussels, Oslo and Paris rounding out the European leg of the tour. Her US tour will be stopping in Seattle, Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia.
