Lady Gaga has shared why she is such a big transgender ally in a new interview, saying that what the community faces is “very unfair”.

Her latest comments follow her Grammy Award acceptance speech last month when she won the ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ for her collaboration with Bruno Mars on ‘Die With A Smile’.

At the time, she argued that transgender people are “not invisible” and that they “deserve love”. She also said that “the queer community deserved to be lifted up”, and that music is one of the best ways to unite.

Discussing the speech with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, the singer addressed the “violence” the community faces on a daily basis, arguing that they must be “protected” from everything going on in the world at the moment.

“What I would say first and foremost is what trans people are being faced with in this world is completely unfair, wrong, and there’s this violence that’s taking place on a daily basis in their lives,” she said, adding, “I think that we all need to support trans people and each other to know that they deserve to be supported and loved and protected and lifted up.”

gaga also acknowledged that what she goes through “is very different” and that what trans people go through is “different” and a “unique experience”, and learning different stories of individuals who are oppressed has made her a better supporter.

The singer released her latest studio album, Mayhem, today, a project that saw her leaning into her love of all music and the “joy of pop”. Discussing the latest direction with Rolling Stone, she admitted to trying to “push sound as much as possible”, adding that, “There’s other moments where it’s all about love, and it’s super dreamy. That, to me, is true chaos.”

“There are times when it’s hard to see the light,” she continued, “But I think sometimes what makes inner chaos harder is when you sometimes get a glimpse of the sun, because you’re like, ‘Man, I wish the sun would shine all the time,’ and then it reminds you of what you’re missing. So the album has all of that. It’s like a full experience.”

Elsewhere, the singer just confirmed she will be performing a free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro this May as part of the Todo Mundo no Rio cultural scheme. Free to attend, the area can house a million people, and will mark Gaga’s first performance in Brazil in over a decade after ill health forced her to cancel in 2017.

As part of the announcement, she expressed her excitement on Instagram, saying, “It’s a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio—for my whole career, the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters. I’ve been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalized.”
