Donald Trump’s White House makes fun of Selena Gomez over deportations in new video

The White House is hitting back at Selena Gomez over a video she posted on Instagram in which she cried over the Trump administration’s deportations of undocumented migrants.

The Emilia Pérez actor quickly deleted the post after receiving backlash, largely from conservative commenters. However, footage is still being shared online, both by supporters and critics of the president’s crackdowns on immigration.

The White House released its own video on Friday titled “Moms of Victims of Illegal Aliens SLAM Selena Gomez: You Didn’t Cry for Our Daughters,” in which women who claim that undocumented immigrants murdered their children respond directly to Gomez’s post.

“Seeing that video, it’s actually hard to believe that it’s genuine and real, because she’s an actress,” one of them says (via Variety). “I am so happy that Trump won. I’m so glad that this is one of the first bills to help with immigration,” the other says, though it isn’t stated in the video which bill she might be referring to.

After deleting her video, Gomez released a longer post on Instagram stories on Monday, saying, “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

In the two weeks since Trump assumed office, he has moved swiftly to follow through with his wide-ranging campaign promises about cutting back on all forms of immigration across the US-Mexico border. Earlier this week, he signed a bill into law that will level harsher penalties on undocumented immigrants who commit crimes in the US and demanded that a detention facility in Guantanamo Bay be opened to house detained migrants. He also threatened to hit Colombia with sanctions if it refused to accept military planes carrying deported migrants.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety study last year (per Variety), undocumented immigrants accounted for the lowest felony crime and violent felony crime rates compared to other groups.
