Anna Calvi announces new EP ‘Is This All There Is?’ with Iggy Pop collaboration

Anna Calvi is a fascinating artist who, since her debut album in 2011, has established herself as one of the most impactful and powerful creatives in modern rock.

Each of her albums has earned her a Mercury nomination, and her list of co-signers includes the likes of Marianne Faithfull, David Byrne, Brian Eno and more, but Calvi is also an artist who does things utterly on her own terms, proven by the fact that since her launch, she’s only released three albums.

Clearly, there is no rushing Calvi. But while she has been busy with a range of other projects, she only moves when she feels truly invested. Instead of delivering a long-awaited fourth album, she composed the soundtracks for Peaky Blinders, released an EP of covers, and has now announced Is This All There Is?, the first instalment in a planned trilogy.

Proof again of Calvi’s power and the respect she harbours is shown in the run of collaborators signed onto this EP. Perfume Genius, The National’s Matt Berninger and Laurie Anderson are on the tracklist, and on the single dropping alongside the announcement, her rich, dramatic voice is paired with Iggy Pop’s.

‘God’s Lonely Man’ is a quintessential Calvi tune with electrifying guitar work from one of our finest players, and staggering vocals to match, reminiscent of her early work as acrobatic high notes and wails meet deep, dark, tense verses.

But as the ante is upped, a new shine and energy is added, launching into a stadium-sized rock tune that’s one of the boldest and most outright tracks she’s ever delivered.

Alongside the Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy cover with Perfume Genius that she shared last year as an early teaser of this project, the two tracks exist on two completely different sides of her artistic coin. Seemingly, this is going to be an EP that explores all corners, laying out the full spectrum of her talent and influences, from softer tunes to this rager with Iggy Pop and even a Kraftwerk cover.

But one thing is guaranteed, and that’s quality, which is why Calvi has fostered such reverence over her career.

She’s always delivered something interesting and flawless, whether it’s an album or even just a performance at a David Bowie tribute gig, and with ‘God’s Lonely Man’, she wastes no time reminding people that it takes someone truly special to outshine Iggy Pop.
