An iconic street in Greenwich Village, New York City, is set to be named after Jimi Hendrix.
New York played a pivotal part in Hendrix’s story, especially Greenwich Village and his Electric Lady Studios, which opened its doors on West Eighth Street in 1970.
Now, it has been confirmed that a sign will read ‘Jimi Hendrix Way’ above the part of West Eighth Street where Electric Lady Studios is located. It will be unveiled during a ceremony, set to take place at 11am on February 24th, 2026.
Hendrix’s sister, Janie, is set to speak at the unveiling alongside E Street Band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt, as well as local councillor Harvey Epstein.
Janie and Van Zandt played a pivotal part in campaigning for the name change, which is part of a wider goal to spread musical education between Experience Hendrix LLC and Van Zandt’s non-profit charity, TeachRock.
Janie Hendrix said in a statement, “This collaboration speaks to the heart of our mission — carrying on Jimi’s legacy through education.”
She continued, “His music is a powerful gateway for young minds to connect with history, creativity, and their own potential.”
Meanwhile, Van Zandt added, “Jimi Hendrix didn’t just play guitar — he reimagined what art could be. I want TeachRock to transport students into that same sense of possibility and discovery I felt the first time I saw Jimi perform. His story, lyrics, and sound remind young people that creativity has no limits.”
Hendrix isn’t the first musician to have the honour of having a street named after them in New York; it has also been bestowed upon local heroes, including Joey Ramone, Wu-Tang Clan, Missy Elliott, Duke Ellington, and Run DMC.
