Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum has been confirmed for a cinematic release on December 17th, 2027.
The upcoming film will star Andy Serkis in the lead role as Gollum, and he will also direct the highly anticipated blockbuster. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the team behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, will reunite to produce two new films in the Lord of the Rings universe.
In addition to their production work, Walsh and Boyens will also write the screenplay for the forthcoming movie with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
As it stands, the director of the second film has yet to be announced, and key details, such as a title or release date, are undisclosed.
Last year, Warner Bros Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav, confirmed the new Lord of the Rings movie with stakeholders during a first-quarter earnings conference call in March 2024.
Zaslav remarked of the franchise: “Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and revered franchises in history and presents a significant opportunity for our theatrical business.”
The CEO also said of Jackson’s role in the new movie and promised the director “will be involved every step of the way” despite Serkis helming the film.
In addition to announcing details about Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros also confirmed work is underway on a new Evil Dead movie, which is set to arrive in cinemas on July 24th, 2026. Souheila Yacoub is to star.
In a third announcement, the production company revealed news of M Night Shyamalan’s next thriller. Remain, set for release on October 23rd, 2026, will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor will lead the cast.
