Sean Penn has warned that Donald Trump could “destroy the world” over the course of his current presidential term in the United States.

The actor and filmmaker was speaking on The Jim Acosta Show podcast on May 1st to discuss his latest directorial effort Words of War, where he left no illusions as to his thoughts on the US president.

Penn said with regard to US citizens’ action that “we should consider worst-case scenarios” and that Trump “might try to destroy the world before he ages out of life.”

“I do think it’s a reasonable theory that Donald Trump is not unlike the spouse of someone who leaves him, perhaps for another,” he continued, “who then murders their former partner because if they can’t have her, nobody can.”

Penn then added: “I think Donald Trump and his solipsism may have that relationship with the world and that this destruction is in part a power play, and also a literal intention of his final out.”

The filmmaker sits in the director’s chair in Words of War, which stars Maxine Peake and Jason Isaacs alongside an ensemble cast which includes Ciarán Hinds and Naomi Battrick. The film follows the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya who was assassinated in 2005 outside her apartment in Moscow.

Relating Russian politics to the current societal direction of travel in the US, Penn noted: “Those who think it can’t happen here either have not studied the certain indications that it will, unless people are involved and they’re educated,” and then warned, “We are tasting in our country what the Russians have gone through.”

Words of War was released in selected US cinemas on May 2nd.
