Exclusively speaking with Far Out, The Lathums have shared the story behind the video for their new single ‘Long Shadows’.

The new track is the latest taste from the band’s upcoming third album, Matter Does Not Define, which is set for release on March 7th, 2025. ‘Long Shadows’ is a personal track that deals with themes of isolation and the loss of a loved one.

Frontman Alex Moore describes the song as being about a “deep emotional struggle and the complexities of love”. He elaborated: “I’m expressing feelings of despair, isolation, and fear of change after losing love, evoking a sense of tragic suffering. Despite the darkness, we recognise love’s enduring presence, though it casts long shadows over our life.”

The singer also noted, “The song explores the dual nature of love and its ability to both heal and hurt. Through metaphors of light, shadow, and transcendence, we find hope in embracing vulnerability and seeks freedom through love.”

Furthermore, exclusively speaking to Far Out, Moore explained the message behind the video for ‘Long Shadows’, which captures him embarking upon a long walk, which was captured in one take, as the viewer goes on this journey with him.

Moore revealed: “With ‘Long Shadows’, the music video was something we absolutely had to get right. It feels more like a short film, exploring deep emotional struggles and the complexities of love. The vocal recording was done in one take, the very first take, which inspired me to approach the video like 1917, where everything feels like it unfolds in a single, continuous scene.” The video is directed by James Slater who Moore credits with helping “bring our vision to life”.

The singer continues: “This year, spending more time at home while working on the album, I’ve developed a real appreciation for long walks to channel my emotions and I’ve found myself drawn to the beauty of bridges and arches. Their architecture really inspired the video’s narrative.”

While the video does primarily feature Moore, the rest of the band makes a blink-and-you-‘ll-miss-it cameo as the frontman walks straight past them in an underground tunnel, which is designed to highlight their differences.

“As for the brief glimpse of the lads, while we’re incredibly close, I’ve always been a bit ‘peculiar,’ as I mention in the song. They’d be the first to admit that I’m not like them in many ways. We wanted the video to reflect that contrast too,” Moore states.

The Lathums will be hitting the road next year to celebrate Matter Does Not Define, including two shows at the O2 Apollo in Manchester in April and a huge outdoor concert in Leeds at Millenium Square in July.
