The Edge recently confirmed that U2 has teamed up with Brian Eno to record new music, following months of speculation amid drummer Larry Mullen Jr’s health concerns.
The Edge shared his forthcoming plans during a new radio interview, in which he said he was working on a series of projects, one with U2, although the music might not sound exactly like the fans expect.
“We were in the studio the other day just working on some crazy new music,” the guitarist told BBC Radio 2, adding, “Bono and I are working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music, which could end up becoming a part of the new U2 album. We’re not sure yet, we’ll see.”
Alongside discussing the 20th anniversary of How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and the reissue of How to Assemble an Atomic Bomb, The Edge explained how U2 approaches music “widely” in the first instance, using their ability to go “off track” to eventually bring it back and stumble upon “unique sounding music.”
Regarding Mullen Jr’s involvement, the guitarist confirmed he had rejoined his bandmates, despite having to sit out of their recent residency at The Sphere to recover from surgery. “We’re at that great phase where we don’t have to over think it, we’re just making music and loving that process,” he said.
Continuing, “Then we’ll figure out where things belong afterwards, so there’s a couple of different projects. Definitely U2, with Larry, which is wonderful. We’ve got him in the studio, he’s good, he’s taking it easy, but he’s back in the saddle on the drums [and] doing some recording with us, and so we’ll be doing a bit more of that before the end of the year.”
The drummer underwent neck surgery prior to the band’s shows in Las Vegas last year, which meant he had to focus on resting and recovering instead of joining his friends on stage. Bono claimed this marked the first time the band had played without Mullen Jr since 1978 when addressing the crowd to honour their missing bandmate.
Discussing the challenge in a previous interview with Zane Lowe, The Edge reflected on Mullen Jr’s impact on the band and shared an update, saying, “I’d say he probably loved [watching U2 perform] on many levels and also probably was like, ‘I can’t wait to get back there.’”
