The 2024 list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations and the subsequent inductees has again whipped up a degree of controversy, as has become the norm over recent years. The music association based in Cleveland, Ohio, recently revealed Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Oasis, Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest will be among the latest members of the club.
While the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a prestigious honour, not every nominee was desperate to become inducted. For instance, when news of their potential induction came through, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher quickly took to social media and criticised the awards. “Fuck the Rock n Roll hall of fame its full of BUMBACLARTS LG x,” he wrote.
In an interview which followed, Gallagher doubled down, saying, “As much as I love Mariah Carey and all that, I want to say: do me a favour and fuck off.” He continued, “It’s like putting me in the rap hall of fame, and I don’t want to be a part of anything that mentally disturbed.”
Ozzy Osbourne’s nomination even came about following some controversy with the awards. After his band, Black Sabbath was inducted, his wife, Sharon Osbourne, complained that he wasn’t recognised as a solo artist. “I will never beg,” she said, “And I will never ask for favours; I’ve never asked anyone for a favour. So, my thing is fuck you if you don’t realise that somebody really deserves to be here. And you don’t recognise that? Then, see ya!”
During her appearance on The Adam Carolla Show last year, Sharon reaffirmed her stance by saying, “They know he’s been a solo artist. You’ve gotta be doing it for 24 years. He’s been 43 years as a solo artist. He nearly sold a hundred million albums as a solo artist. So where is he? Induct him!”
The complete list of official inductees was released on April 22nd. Osbourne will be inducted alongside Cher, the Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest, Foreigner, Kool & The Gang, and Peter Frampton.
Following the announcement that Osbourne was being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, Sharon took to social media to thank everybody for voting. “Thank you to all who voted!!” She said, “This means the world to Ozzy!!!”
Ozzy also wrote his own thank you, describing the induction as “special.” “Thank you Rock Hall Voters & Fans for this induction,” he wrote, “My solo career has been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole, so this feels more special. Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.”
