The first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man has been released. This hotly anticipated updated adaptation of the classic Steven King novel stars Glen Powell in the lead role.

The film depicts a murderous gameshow in which ‘Hunters’ chase contestants for money; Powell’s character Ben must survive 30 days being hunted by the general public. His motive is a sick child; his status as a blacklisted worker in a dystopian American present means he is unable to earn money for a doctor.

Wright’s new trailer shows Powell shouting, “I’m still here, you shit eaters!” at the camera, demonstrating the rebellion so central to his character. The large ensemble cast supporting him includes Josh Brolin, Katy O’Brian, Lee Pace, and Colman Domingo.

The game host, played by Domingo, cries “blood lust is our birthright” in the trailer, depicting an American society thirsty for the spectacle of violence and death. As the official synopsis reveals, “Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favourite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.”

The trailer highlights a curious bond between Powell and an unlikely confidant, played by Michael Cera, who assists Powell with defeating the Hunters. The cast were spotted around sites in London and Glasgow, filming cat-and-mouse sequences in 2024. The trailer amassed eight million views within 24 hours of upload.

Wright has previously described the film as an “intense, dangerous road movie.” He noted how Powell’s character is “moving through different environments and meeting different people as he tries to survive 30 days out in the wild.” Inspired by King’s novel and the 1987 version of the film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the director originally voiced his wish to remake the movie in a 2017 social media post. Almost a decade later, the movie is relaunched.

The Running Man is set for release in cinemas in the UK on November 7th, 2025.
