Hole singer Courtney Love unexpectedly took on a cover of Bob Dylan’s seminal hit ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ while on stage at an event in London on March 5th.
The impromptu performance came about as Love was appearing in conversation at the Royal Geographical Society alongside the actor-writer Todd Almond, celebrating the release of his new oral history book, Slow Train Coming: Bob Dylan’s ‘Girl From the North Country’ and Broadway’s Rebirth. The book charts Dylan’s sonic and social legacy.
Almond starred in Dylan’s jukebox musical while also casting Love in her first opera in 2015. Following their conversation in London, the pair burst into a soaring cover of the 1960s anthem, incidentally at a venue a stone’s throw away from where Dylan famously performed the tune at the Royal Albert Hall in 1966.
With Almond accompanying her on guitar, Love raced through the tongue twister tune much to fans’ delight, only briefly stopping a few times to remind herself of the lyrics.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Love once again shut down rumours that her band Hole would be reuniting, while also announcing that she plans to go on tour in her own right soon.
Love’s latest Dylan cover comes after she recently took to the stage with Billie Joe Armstrong and his band the Cover-Ups to perform Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ ‘Even the Losers’ as well as ‘He’s a Whore’ and ‘Surrender’ made famous by Cheap Tricks.
She told the crowd at the time: “You may not remember me. I’ve been living in a cave in Birmingham for about nine years. We’ll give this a fucking try, right?”
