The Wicked universe is expanding. Universal Studios has revealed they are searching for other stories to tell in the City of Oz.
Wicked and its follow-up, Wicked: For Good, have been huge successes at the box office. In the movies, Ariana Grande plays Princess Glinda and Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba in the classic tale. The pair sing and dance throughout a treacherous journey to ensure good triumphs over evil in Oz, just as Dorothy comes into the fold.
Reacting to the success of the two-parter, Michael Moses, Universal’s Chief Marketing Officer, has shared to Vulture, “Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe.”
He continued, “Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”
It isn’t just Moses who has his thinking hat on. Composer Stephen Schwartz and writer Winnie Holzman have been thumping their heads together for more Wicked inspiration, though, as per The Ankler, Schwartz is “just not sure that the right idea exists.”
Schwartz shared that he and Holzman are “doing some work right now on ideas that aren’t a sequel to Wicked, because I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete — but there are other aspects that could be explored.”
The creative team have dozens of source materials that they can reference; Gregory Maguire, who wrote the original Wicked novel that serves as the key source material for the adaptation and stage musical, has released several other projects that may work for a continuation of the fantastical universe.
Wicked: For Good is now officially the most successful Broadway adaptation of all time, earning over $150million at the international box office after its opening weekend, according to current figures.
Wicked: For Good is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer for the second instalment below.
