This year, the greatly anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice by Tim Burton will be opening the Venice Film Festival.

Burton’s movie is a sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice, his second feature following his debut, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. The gothic fantasy director earned significant acclaim with the film, which starred Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. It garnered significant box office success, putting Burton on the map as one of cinema’s greatest new directors.

Several decades later, Burton is officially one of cinema’s most recognisable names, with many titles under his belt, like Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Planet of the Apes, and Batman. Thus, a sequel for one of his earliest and beloved movies has finally come to fruition, with several cast members reprising their roles.

Ryder, Keaton and Catherine O’Hara will all star as their original characters. The movie sees Lydia and Delia Deetz return to their house years later, where Lydia’s daughter accidentally unlocks a gateway to the afterlife. As a result, the beloved titular character, played by Keaton, makes his return to the screen.

There has been much excitement surrounding Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which will also star some new faces. Jenna Ortega, a new Burton favourite following her role as the lead in Wednesday, will play Astrid, Lydia’s daughter. Monica Bellucci will star as an ex-lover of Beetlejuice, while Justin Theroux will portray Lydia’s husband, and Willem Dafoe will make an appearance as a ghost.

Its debut will mark the beginning of the Venice Film Festival, although it’ll be screened out of competition. After being shown at the iconic festival on August 28th, it is set for release worldwide on September 6th, allowing everyone to enjoy the long-awaited sequel.

Alberto Barbera, the chief of Venice Film Festival, explained (via Deadline), “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks the long-awaited return of one of the most iconic characters of Tim Burton’s cinema, but also the happy confirmation of the extraordinary visionary talent and the masterly realisation of one of the most fascinating auteurs of his time. The Venice Biennale is honoured and proud to host the world premiere of a work that features a surprising swing of creative imagination and driving hallucinatory rhythm.”
