The ongoing prank war between Sting and Rod Stewart: “You miserable git”

“I find beauty in what everyone else sees as ugly,” explained Rod Stewart, “Rugged skyscrapers, beaten-up warehouses, things that are very run down.” This romantic statement doesn’t come from discussing a gentrified area or how times change all things but from Rod Stewart praising his model train set, which took him over 23 years to build.

“When I take on something creative like this, I have to give it 110%,” said Stewart, “For me, it’s addictive. I started, so I just had to finish. I’m lucky I had the room. If I’d have realised at the start it would have taken so long, I’d have probably said, ‘No! No! Nah!”

The more you learn about Rod Stewart and his model trainset, the more one thing becomes clear above all else. When you consider the work that went into putting the figures together, the fact he would ring hotels and venues in advance on tour to make sure they could accommodate it, and the joy he got from finishing it, all goes to show that Rod Stewart remains a child at heart.

Being a global musical superstar can be very stressful. Rod Stewart’s soulful voice, paired with his dabble in various other genres, has cemented him as a staple across the music industry, which means that he has every right to be stressed about his career and struggling to come to terms with the magnitude of his discography. Stewart doesn’t give in to this pressure, though. Instead, he enjoys his life, revelling in his success and having fun every step of the way.

A lot of that fun comes from his passion for his work. He has reached the stage now where no sound or movement is off limits, and he can dabble in whatever genre comes to mind. He also continues to perform to his heart’s content, frequently turning up for occasions big and small to deliver some of his iconic tracks.

Another way that Rod Stewart continues to enjoy himself, however, would be a little bit more unexpected to some, but given his childlike nature, it’s to be entirely expected. The soulful singer frequently enjoys himself by playing pranks on the unexpected. Most people laugh it off and pocket it as a good story to tell; however, one artist who retaliated was The Police frontman, Sting.

“We had a plane in America, Rod had used it the night before for his gig, we took it over the next day. So I sit down at the table and there, very intricately carved, is, ‘Where’s your fucking sense of humour, you miserable git String?’” Recalled Sting, “I see this and get the stewardess. ‘What’s this?’ She says, ‘I know, I’m sorry, I was going to explain, Rod Stewart did it yesterday’. I said, ‘A 50-year-old man sat here for half an hour and wrote me this message? I don’t believe it!’”

In a bid to get his own back, one day during a gap in touring, Sting heard that Rod Stewart was flying back to his home in Los Angeles following a gig in Reno. The Police singer went to Rod Stewarts house before he got home from his gig to make it so that he wouldn’t be able to get in.

“I went to his house, found there’s only one gate to his estate, and it opens sideways, electrically. So I bought a big industrial chain, went up about 11.30 at night, and fastened the gate to the fence,” he said, “The security guards came, the dogs were barking, but they couldn’t get out! So I buzz off. Then Rod comes back from his gig and can’t get into his house for three hours, cos he has to get someone with an industrial cutter to open his lovely gate.”
