To celebrate the holidays, indie rock favourites The Killers have released a surprise single on their social media platforms. It is yet to hit streaming services.

The untitled track has been shared across The Killers’ accounts on Facebook, Instagram and X, accompanied by a photo of a present in the shape of the letter K. In a caption, the band wrote, “Santa’s got a brand new song in his bag. Merry Christmas!”

The song, which is currently only available to listen to via the band’s social media, shows off the band’s new wave influences and Brandon Flowers’ distinctive vocals. “We did it in the name of love,” he repeats in the chorus.

The new single follows the release of Rebel Diamonds earlier this month, a compilation album spanning songs from throughout their twenty-year career. The record includes classic hits like ‘Mr. Brightside’ and ‘Somebody Told Me’, alongside more recent offerings such as ‘Quiet Town’.

Despite the new wave-inspired single, Flowers recently admitted that the band had scrapped a synth album as it didn’t feel “authentic.” “It felt like we were forcing something,” he stated in an interview.

“We love synth music, it’s a part of our DNA and there’s been great contributions from us in that genre,” he continued, “And man, we love New Order and Depeche Mode, so it’s not a slight.” Still, the frontman concluded that it just didn’t feel like the right move for the band.
