Love it or hate it, The Killers’ debut single ‘Mr Brightside’ is now the biggest song in the United Kingdom never to reach the number one spot, according to the Official Charts Company.

Since its release in 2003, the sound of people singing in unison, “Coming out of my cage and I’ve been doing just fine,” has been unavoidable at practically every party or on every dancefloor. The song has managed to endure as a modern classic, yet it’s never managed to grab the top spot on the UK Charts.

In the 21 years since it was released, it has racked up over 530 million streams through services such as Spotify and sold over 1.1 million units. Additionally, the music video, uploaded to YouTube in 2009, has also amassed a whopping 561,397,918 views – further testament to its incredible popularity.

‘Mr Brightside’ appeared on The Killers’ debut album, Hot Fuss, which was released in 2004 alongside other singles like ‘Somebody Told Me’ and ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’. However, it’s ‘Mr Brightside’ that has lasted the test of time, receiving 79.97 million streams in 2023 alone.

When the song was first released, it hit number ten in the UK Charts, which, to this day, remains the highest number it’s charted at. For 408 weeks straight, the song has sat in the Official Singles Chart Top 100, which is a record in its own right, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be dropping out of the chart race anytime soon.

Talking to Official Charts, The Killers said, “Thank you so much to all our fans for making Mr. Brightside the third biggest song of all time in the UK, and the biggest ever not to have reached Number 1; not yet at least!”

The band, who hail from Las Vegas, added: “This Top 10 Award means a lot to us, Mr. Brightside has been completely embraced by the British public and we can’t wait to celebrate with you all on the road. Thank you for supporting us. See you soon!”

Just beneath ‘Mr Brightside’ in a list of the most popular songs to have never hit number one are tracks like ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis and ‘All of Me’ by John Legend.
