The guitar Kirk Hammett wielded at Black Sabbath’s iconic farewell show has sold for an unexpectedly large sum.
The farewell performance for the metal pioneers took place on July 5th. It featured performances from a whole host of rock legends, including Alice In Chains, Guns N’ Roses, KoRn, Tool, Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Yungblud, Anthrax, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, and many more.
During Metallica’s performance at the legendary gig, Hammett played on a silver Gibson SG, notably on their cover of Sabbath’s ‘Hole In The Sky’. After the show, Hammett signed the instrument.
Later, the piece was listed for sale via Julien’s Auctions as part of the ongoing Played, Worn & Torn auction. This year, it featured over 800 guitars and rare pieces of other music memorabilia.
Originally, it was estimated that Hammett’s instrument would sell for around $4,000 to $6,000. Instead, it fetched an eye-watering $76,800.
This wasn’t the only guitar Hammett put up for sale. He also let go of a 1985 Gibson Custom Shop Michael Schenker Flying V, which went for an incredible $160,000. Also, his 1996 ESP Wavecaster went for $89,600. His Mamma Said 1990s ESP Custom Shop M2 went for $32,000.
The guitar in question is a huge part of metal history, as the Back to the Beginning performance happened just over two weeks before Ozzy Osbourne passed away at the age of 76, from cardiac arrest.
The Osbourne family confirmed his death in a statement at the time.“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” they wrote.
Kirk Hammett paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne via an impromptu live version of ‘Crazy Train’ with Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo during an intimate SiriusXM show in the Hamptons earlier this year.
Metallica also paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne with a heartfelt statement, which deemed the public figure a “hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and, most of all, friend”.
