Gavin O’Connor, the director of action movie The Accountant 2, has revealed that Anna Kendrick could still return to the series after taking a lead role in its original 2016 film, but failing to appear in its recent sequel.

The franchise, starring Ben Affleck, follows an autistic accountant called Christian Wolff who is forced to transform into an assassin after one of his clients endangers his own life. The first film featured Kendrick as the character’s love interest, Dana Cummings, but she does not appear in the sequel, released on April 25th.

Speaking about this to Entertainment Weekly, O’Connor revealed that Kendrick’s absence from the second instalment was intentional. “When Bill Dubuque [the film’s screenwriter] and I started talking about the second movie, it was very important that we didn’t want a love story,” he said. “We wanted a love story with brothers. We wanted to do a 48 Hours or Midnight Run kind of buddy picture.”

O’Connor added: “Then the third movie, which is what the plan has always been, is for [Christian’s] quest for love and connection to be consummated. I don’t know what that’s going to be yet, but that’s the intention.”

The director previously told The New York Times that he was in “preliminary conversations” with Kendrick to bring her back into the fold of the series in the future, explaining: “I am personally running from another puzzle movie, which we’ve done twice now. One thing we’ve talked about is the idea of bringing Anna Kendrick back. Maybe Christian can finally get the love that he deserves.”

In response to a joke from Affleck questioning if the actor still liked the film’s team, O’Connor said: “Actually, Ben, she and I have been texting. She said she’s a hundred per cent in if we want.”

The Accountant 2 has not followed in the successful heights of its predecessor, only bringing in $25 million so far at the box office.
