Ryan Coogler’s sultry, scary vampire thriller Sinners is exceeding box office projections and is predicted to make upwards of $42million on its second weekend. This is no small feat, having made $48m over its opening weekend.
If Sinners grosses between $42m and $44m on its second weekend, in line with multiple projections, it would be one of the second-weekend drops in history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B Jordan, who return to their Mississippi hometown and plan to open a juke joint. It also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton and Jack O’Connell.
The second, third, and fourth-place spots at the box office will be a closer race. The Accountant 2, a sequel to the 2016 thriller starring Ben Affleck, is projected to land in second place with $25m. The 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith is projected to rank third. Speaking at a special anniversary event, Star Wars creator George Lucas finally revealed why Yoda speaks backwards.
A Minecraft Movie, which has enjoyed great success at the box office over the last few weeks, is predicted to land third. The movie, which stars Jack Black, hit headlines recently when a viral TikTok trend caused children to cause havoc in the cinema at a particular scene, throwing popcorn and making a mess.
This amalgamation of cinema offerings means box office sales are soaring; ticket sales are up more than 100 per cent in the US over the same frame last year.
Additionally, due to the impressive visuals in the movie, there has been unprecedented demand for IMAX and other premium large-format viewing. In the US, IMAX alone represented 20% of revenue on opening weekend.
Sinners has been praised for, among other things, its depiction of the blues. Ludwig Göransson, the Oscar-winning composer, perfected this by travelling the world to find the perfect guitar for the film’s demands.
