Sharon Stone has come to Sydney Sweeney’s defense after her recent partnership with American Eagle went viral for all the wrong reasons.
In the much-discussed advertisement, American Eagle teamed up with Sydney Sweeney for a new campaign, Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, which plays on “jeans” and “genes”. The advert faced criticism for promoting eugenics.
Stone was in attendance at Variety’s Power of Women event in Los Angeles, where she was set to present honours to Sweeney later that evening. Stone is familiar with Sweeney, having recently worked with her for several months now on the new season of Euphoria.
When asked about the advertisement on the carpet, Stone shared with Variety, “It’s okay to use what mama gave you. It’s really fine.” She added, “It’s hard to be hot, and I think we all know that. It’s really okay to use every bit of hotness you have — right here, right now — and go for whatever that is.”
The Basic Instinct actor continued, “Everybody has their own certain kind of hotness, their own certain thing, and you’re supposed to go for that. Because who are you not to be beautiful? You know, who you are isn’t an accident.”
Stone recounted her own discussion with Sweeney on the jeans advert, sharing, “Because I was co-godparents with Jane Goodall, I said, ‘When Jane was on the cover of Life Magazine for her work with gorillas, she was in her safari shorts and shirt, sitting with one of the animals that she was working with.”
Stone continued, “Other scientists said, ‘Well, she only got the cover of Life Magazine because she had good legs.’ And Jane said, ‘Well, if I did, then that helped me get more money for my research’. Sydney said, ‘Yeah, and I’m sure I made a billion dollars for the jeans company, and I’m good with that. Because, you know what? I’ll get another job.’”
Another famous name to come to her defence during the scandal was none other than the US President, Donald Trump. Reacting to reports that she had registered as a Republican in 2024, Trump said, “She’s a registered Republican? Now I love her ad. You’d be surprised how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that.”
The third season of Euphoria will include eighteen new faces, including Natasha Lyonne, Trisha Paytas, and, of course, Stone. The HBO series is slated for a spring 2026 return, following multiple delays that have widened the release gap since the second season was released in early 2022.
