Seth Rogen has claimed it only takes “one movie, one weekend” to change the course of Hollywood and ultimately save the industry.
In an interview with Howard Stern on March 26th, the actor rebuked the notion that the golden age of filmmaking was gone, as it has already been argued so many times before.
Asked by Stern if the Hollywood “ship has sailed”, Rogen said: “That’s always been a thought that Hollywood has. In, like, the 1950s, people were [saying] ‘Hollywood’s dead’. The magic of Hollywood, I think, is that one movie, one weekend, can change the entire outlook of the entire industry.”
Rogen then reflected on the impact of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 smash blockbuster Barbie on his own work, namely his new satirical comedy series, The Studio.
Speaking of the shake-up the film provided, he added: “Honestly, that [Barbie] changed the whole show. It was a lot more bleak when we were writing it initially, and then the Barbie–Oppenheimer thing happened, and we were like, ‘Everything’s different!’”
For Rogen, this speaks to the fact that the industry is overall not quite as stagnant as is often made out. He continued: “What’s so frustrating about Hollywood, and what’s so alluring about these delusions of grandeur – especially if you run a movie studio – is that you think you might be the person to course correct all of Hollywood.”
“Singular people have done that,” the actor added, “but if you were someone who was willing to buy into the delusions of grandeur of all of it, you could view yourself as the person who single-handedly saves Hollywood. That allure is very real, but also frustrating as people are put in a position of, ‘Do I take the swing that could maybe save Hollywood, or do I not get fired?’, and often they choose to not get fired.”
The first two episodes of Rogen’s series The Studio are now streaming on Apple TV+.
