On June 6th, during his sold-out show at the London Stadium, Sam Fender addressed the crowds with a rousing speech in support of a free Palestine, while also addressing the efforts of humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders (also known as Médecins sans frontières).
Performing in front of a crowd of 80,000 onlookers, Fender spoke out about the ongoing atrocities being committed in Gaza before the final song of his encore, ‘Hypersonic Missiles’, and delivered an emotional and heartfelt plea to fans to show their support for the relief and aid efforts for Palestinians.
“It breaks my heart, and it’s probably more relevant now than it was then,” he said, in reference to the lyrics of the song. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed but we’ve got Doctors Without Borders with us at the show tonight. They do incredible work out there, they’re legitimate, real heroes who are out there helping the people, and they’re gonna be with us on all of our summer shows.”
Before beginning the song, he concluded: “They’ve been subjected to a genocide. It has to stop, and we need to do everything that we can. Free Palestine.”
This is not the first time Fender has shown support for those affected by the genocide, having signed a letter pleading for a ceasefire in Gaza in November 2023, following the increased military offensives from Israel in response to the October 7th attacks by the Palestinian rebel group, Hamas.
Also performing in support of Fender last night were Irish pop-country sensation CMAT, and rising soul star Olivia Dean, both of who are scheduled to release new albums later this year.
The show marked Fender’s biggest headline performance to date, kicking off his busy summer tour where he will also perform three sold-out shows in his hometown of Newcastle at St James’ Park, the home of his beloved Newcastle United FC.
