The infamous collaborative pair, actor Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos, have revealed a release date for their newest offering, Bugonia.

The film will open in select theatres on October 24th and expand nationwide on October 31st. This is slightly earlier than the original release date of November 7th, which also coincides with Halloween. October 31st will also mark the first day it is available in UK cinemas.

Focus Features is rolling out Bugonia in the US and Canada, while Universal Pictures will handle international distribution.

Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet. It will follow two conspiracy-obsessed friends who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major corporation because they are convinced she’s an alien intent on destroying Earth.

Familiar faces in the Lanthimos universe will lend their talents to the film. Jesse Plemons, who worked with Stone and Lanthimos on Kinds of Kindness, also leads the cast alongside Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. This comes after the recent news that Plemons will take on Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The movie made headlines in April due to a logistical nightmare. It was revealed that Greek authorities refused to give permission to film the new movie at the Acropolis. They requested that public access to the Acropolis be restricted for four days to allow time for filming and setting up, which is a key reason why it was turned down.

Bugonia marks the fifth consecutive film by Lanthimos to star Stone, who won an Oscar in 2024 for her performance in Poor Things. In a four-star review of Poor Things, Far Out said, “The heart of it is Emma Stone, playing the pivotal Baxter, and it’s clear that the very fact this movie exists is almost entirely down to the fact that Yorgos and Stone have found in each other a genuinely like-minded collaborator.”
