Quick-fire Questions: 10 minutes with Flat Party

The swagger of Suede, the lyrical wit of Pulp, the anthemic abilities that saw Blur and Oasis battling it out; take all the Britpop greats, mush them into one package, and the result will be something like Flat Party. As a Frankenstein’s creature-like indie creation, the London-based band are another act leading the charge that’s bringing guitar music back.
But for those in the know, Flat Party aren’t new. They’ve been working away since 2022 with their 2023 single ‘Dig Up Concrete With A Plastic Shovel’ establishing them as ones to watch and their 2024 self-titled EP bringing the hype to fruition. Across the five tracks, they covered all bases to prove they had the making to be the UK’s most exciting new act. ‘Aching For A Living’ tackles politics with catchy ease, while ‘I’m Bored, Give Me Love’ is an anthem worthy of the biggest festival stages. They could already do it all, but now they’re doing it all even better.
Clearly not an act to rest on their laurels, the group seemed to get right back to work. Six months after their debut EP, ‘Shotgun’ arrived to announce the start of their second. Since then, it’s seemed like the band has absolutely nailed their sound. Across the singles heard so far, the standard has been golden. The lyrics are smart and packed with razor-sharp one-liners littered within indie poetry, the instrumentals are hooky and hang in your mind all day, and each song offers something new while existing in the same sonic world.
With the release of the new EP, titled It’s All Been Done Before, we thought it was a great time to get to know the band before they inevitably become too big and famous to answer silly questions about cocktails and riders. If you want to be able to say you were a fan before that ego-boosting blow-up happens, now is your chance.
Quick-fire Questions with Flat Party
What makes a good flat party?
“Some small talk, some big talk, a disco ball and a French exit. C’est magnifique.”
If your band was a cocktail, what cocktail would it be?
“A virgin daiquiri.”
What’s the best gig you’ve played so far?
“We played Supersonic in Paris and were completely blown away by the whole experience. We could have left after the pre-gig buffet, and it would still be the best gig we’ve played.”
And what’s been the worst?
Jack: “Probably when we played New Cross Inn. The gig was pretty poorly attended anyway, but to top it off, I did a star-jump and managed to split my nose open on one of the stage lights.”
What’s the best gig you’ve been to (that you didn’t play)?
Nic: “I went to see LCD Soundsystem with my Dad at Warehouse Project in 2017; it was a very special gig. Will never forget the look on his face when he found out LCD were going on at 11pm, way past his bedtime.”
If you could build your dream festival, who are the headliners?
“Suede, Rage Against The Machine and Sabrina Carpenter, something for everyone…”
And who’s playing the Sunday afternoon Legend slot?
Nic: “Would love Nina Simone or Sinatra from beyond the grave. If the spirit realm is out of the question, I would love to see Simon and Garfunkel pull themselves together for one more ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’.”
What are some things that have All Been Done Before, and therefore, should stop?
“Fascism, colonialism and meringue.”
Would you consider yourselves to be ‘Madonna’ fans?
“Yes, but we’re just good friends, really.”
If you were the most famous band in the world and could be as diva-ish as you wanted, what would be on your rider?
“Scratch cards, Yazoo choccy milk with a curly straw, a pot of toxic wastes for pre-show adrenaline and a Pocari Sweat each.”
What’s your favourite song of 2024 so far?
“’Good Luck Babe’ by Chappell Roan.”
If you had to replace every member of Flat Party with other musicians, who would be taking your place?
“Eazy E, MC Ren, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and Noddy Holder. A true meeting of the minds.”
How do you write a good song?
“We’ll let you know once we’ve written one.”
Make a case for an underrated track that you think deserves more love.
“Deaf School’s ‘Taxi’ is a masterpiece of art-rock goodness that will never be beat. A criminally underrated group that would give any band working today a run for their money, if I can’t convince you with that, whack on ‘Run Away With Me’ by Carly Rae Jepsen and try not to crack a smile.”
Are The Beatles overrated?
“Not sure, only ever listened to The Rutles (Deffo underrated).”
