Plans for ‘Saw XI’ reportedly scrapped

Saw XI has reportedly been scrapped after production halted over a year ago, according to a new update.

The follow-up to 2023’s Saw X was confirmed in December 2023, shortly after the film’s release. Saw XI was initially scheduled for release in September 2024 but was later pushed back to September 2025.

At the time, producer Oren Koules hinted at the direction of the next instalment, saying that it would likely start where X ended, with several of the characters’ plots far from wrapping up.

Director Kevin Greutert and stars Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, and Costas Mandylor were set to return for Saw XI. However, according to Bloody Disgusting, production halted over a year ago, and the producers are allegedly to blame.

According to the outlet, an insider source confirmed that the product was “100 per cent over” and that “everything went sideways in January 2024” after the producers “started fighting”.

Allegedly, one producer wanted to “plow forward” with the project, but the other responded with “roadblocks” while Lionsgate didn’t have “anyone to smooth over” the dispute. In the end, “greed and ego won”.

Plans for the project have remained unclear since last year, especially after screenwriter Patrick Melton told The Hollywood Reporter that he had submitted a script in spring but had “heard nothing.” He added that the project had “stalled at managerial level” with “higher-level things at play.”

“The reason it’s held up is just, there’s inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can’t quite get on the same page,” he said.

This has left fans of the series understandably confused and concerned about the franchise’s future, especially considering the previous movie’s success at the box office. A staple in the horror genre, the Saw franchise comprises nine ten released between 2004 and 2023, with the first grossing $100 million worldwide.

Created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, the franchise has become one of horror’s most popular features, sparking a cult following. With the latest project scrapped, it’s unclear whether it will resume some ways down the line, or whether this is finally the end of the road.
