Season two of the highly acclaimed black comedy Bad Sisters has recently been released on Apple TV+. It features a new collection of songs by PJ Harvey made to soundtrack the show, including a cover of Joy Division’s classic track, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.
In 2022, the musician joined forces with Tim Phillips to make the soundtrack for season one, which included a cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Who By Fire’, the show’s theme song. It wasn’t the first time Harvey made a soundtrack album; she previously recorded the music for the stage adaptation of All About Eve and a handful of songs for the Shane Meadows miniseries The Virtues.
Now, Harvey has reconvened with Phillips for the Bad Sisters season two soundtrack, with a reimagining of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ opening the album. The original version of the song, released in 1980, can be heard in the first-ever episode of the show, but here, Harvey puts her own spin on it, beginning the track with an urgent beat.
Harvey explained in a statement (via Stereogum), “Our version of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is full of the passion we hold for the original song, but also imbued with the spirit of the new series and its narrative.”
Manipulating her voice as the song reaches its final third, Harvey and Phillips have adapted the track to feel slightly more modern. It fits perfectly on the soundtrack, which moves between haunting pieces like ‘You’re Getting Nothing’, and frantic numbers such as ‘Disembark At Your Peril’.
What to know about Bad Sisters season two
After Bad Sisters aired on Apple TV+ in 2022, it was quickly praised. It was helmed by Sharon Horgan, who has previously co-created shows such as Pulling, Catastrophe, and Motherland, alongside Dave Finkel and Brett Baer, who previously worked as a pair on the likes of New Girl and 30 Rock.
Bad Sisters follows a group of Irish sisters who are investigated after the death of John Paul, the horrible husband of one of the siblings. We are left wondering if the group actually killed the man or not, as the series unravels to reveal more and more secrets about John Paul and the sisters.
Following the success of series one, the new series has begun airing on the streaming service. An episode is scheduled to be released each week, concluding on Christmas Day. There are eight episodes in the season, and two are already available to watch on AppleTV+.
The new series includes a selection of new characters, such as Fiona Shaw’s Angelica, Thaddea Graham’s Una, and Owen McDonnell’s Ian, alongside plenty of new mysteries that will unravel.
